XLWB van capacity: planning your consignment

24 September 2026

An extra-long wheelbase (XLWB) van is the workhorse of dedicated courier transport. It offers a generous load area while remaining nimble enough for city collections, residential streets, and sites where a larger goods vehicle cannot access.

Typical XLWB load dimensions sit around 4.3 metres in load length, 1.7 metres in width, and 1.9 metres in height, with a payload in the region of 1,000 to 1,200 kg. These figures are a planning guide, not a guarantee.

The reason final capacity is always confirmed against the specific vehicle is that payload and load space vary with the exact model, any racking or bulkhead fitted, and the weight of fuel and equipment on board. A consignment that fits on paper still has to fit on the van allocated.

When planning, measure your consignment at its longest, widest and tallest points. For multiple items, think about how they stack and whether they need to be loaded in a particular order for the handover at the other end.

Weight is the figure that catches people out. A load that fills the van volumetrically is rarely near the payload limit, but a dense load — palletised metal, machinery, or liquid — can exceed payload well before it fills the space. Share the total weight with the enquiry, not just the dimensions.

If your consignment is close to the limits, say so when requesting a quote. The quote is assessed against the real vehicle, and an honest assessment at the enquiry stage is what keeps the collection and delivery running without a last-minute problem.
